Embracing Sustainable Living with Slow

Discover why non-toxic sofas from Slow are essential for a healthy home, sustainable living, and a greener future
28/06/2023

In our pursuit of a safe and healthy home, we often overlook a hidden danger lurking in our cosy sofas and soft furnishings. Conventional sofas are often laden with toxic chemicals that threaten our well-being and the environment. At Slow, we recognise the importance of non-toxic living and have made it our mission to craft sustainable and eco-friendly sofas that prioritise your health without compromising comfort or style.

Why Choose Slow?

Nestled in the breathtaking landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales, our Slow workrooms inspire us to go beyond profit and consider the long-term impact of our choices. We are committed to designing durable and timeless furniture using unparalleled craftsmanship and the finest materials, ensuring our creations withstand the test of time.

Unveiling Slow's Non-Toxic Approach

When we say our sofas are non-toxic, we mean it—from the frame to the fabrics that envelop them. Transparency and traceability are the foundations of our practices, allowing you to make informed choices for a healthier home.

1. Thoughtfully Sourced Frames:

Our frames are meticulously crafted from FSC-certified beechwood and PEFC-certified eco-plywood. These international certifications guarantee responsible forest management, ensuring every piece of wood can be traced back to its source.

2. Eco-Friendly Fibre Filling:

Most back cushions are filled with eco-fibre, a remarkable material made from recycled PET plastic bottles. Upcycling these bottles contributes to a closed-loop manufacturing process while preventing environmental harm. This synthetic fibre also aids in preventing the accumulation of dust mites and bacteria, making it an excellent choice for allergy sufferers.

3. Revolutionary Ultraflex Wrap:

The body of our sofas is carefully enveloped in Ultraflex, a game-changing alternative to traditional PU foam. Engineered to provide unrivalled rebound, comfort, and durability, Ultraflex is naturally flame-retardant, hypoallergenic, and free from harmful VOCs. It is proudly crafted in an energy-efficient Yorkshire-based facility, primarily using recycled single-use plastic bottles and renewable energy sources.

4. Natural Latex Seat Cushions:

Our seat cushions are filled with 100% natural latex—a premium material that rivals foam in structure, comfort, and longevity. Latex retains its shape for up to 20 years, resists distortion, and boasts natural hypoallergenic and antimicrobial properties, creating a healthier seating experience.

5. RDS-Certified Feather Wrap:

We prioritise ethical sourcing by using only RDS-certified feathers to wrap our seat cushions. The Responsible Down Standard ensures that the feathers are obtained from birds that have not experienced pain, suffering, or stress and maintain a traceability system for complete transparency.

6. Sustainable Upholstery Fabrics:

Our upholstery fabrics adhere to the highest standards of eco-consciousness. They are among the lowest VOC-emitting products in the industry and meet REACH compliance, which regulates chemical substances' impact on human health and the environment. Many of our fabrics also carry the Oeko-Tex 100 certification, affirming their safety throughout production. We offer a range of fire retardancy and stain resistance treatments while sourcing fabrics made from recycled materials, such as our Performance Wool, to minimise our carbon footprint.

Our commitment to becoming the "greenest" sofa on the market drives us to constantly seek out innovative eco-materials and set new benchmarks for sustainability in the furniture industry. By choosing Slow, you become part of our community and partner with us in conscious living. Thank you for joining us on this eco journey. We're excited to see where it takes us as we continue to prioritise your well-being and the well-being of our planet.
